Find the report, then check its scope
Open Settings → Screen Time and open the activity summary. Depending on your iOS version, this is labelled See All App & Website Activity or Daily Average. Switch between Day and Week to compare recent use. If activity tracking was off, allow time for a useful report to build.
Check whether you are viewing one device or combined activity. Share Across Devices can include other Apple devices signed in to your account. A long Mac workday and an evening on your iPhone answer different questions; do not treat a combined total as phone scrolling.
Separate time you chose from time you lost
Look at your most-used apps and annotate three of them on paper: needed, chosen, or drifted. Needed might be navigation. Chosen might be a call with a friend. Drifted might be opening a feed after that call and staying there.
The same app can belong to all three. A messaging app may contain both important conversations and a group you repeatedly check. These labels describe sessions, not whether an app is good or bad.
Look for the start of a session
Review pickups and notifications alongside app time. They can suggest where to investigate, but a high count does not explain your motive. Recall one recent opening: what happened just before it? An alert, a difficult email, waiting for food, or getting into bed?
Write a concrete observation: “After lunch, I opened Instagram while avoiding the first work task.” That gives you something to change. “I have no discipline” does not.
Keep a comparison you can actually use
Record the time in one target app and one everyday outcome, such as when you started studying. Compare similar days next week. Travel, video calls and a quiet weekend can change totals without telling you whether your plan worked.
Avoid checking the chart every hour. Make the next review an appointment, not another phone habit. Use a realistic screen-time goal to turn your observation into a small experiment.
Close the tab. Try this.
One small action.
Write down the device, date range, one app’s usage, and one session you regretted. Choose a single place or time to protect tomorrow. That is your whole first review.
A report becomes useful when it changes one decision.
